Mackenzie Boyd’s departure from Emmerdale has a clear purpose and a defined limit: Robert Sugden is sending him to Germany for a farming course, and the character is expected back after this year’s Strictly champion is revealed. The arrangement gives Lawrence Robb time for the dance competition while giving Mack a reason to leave the village that connects directly to the farm’s future.

The plan emerged in the episode dated October 13. Robert told Matty Barton that he intended to send Mackenzie away, a decision Matty didn’t welcome. He wants more help with the daily work at Emmerdale Farm, so Mack’s absence leaves a practical gap at a moment when Matty would prefer another pair of hands.

Charity Dingle heard the news from Mack at Jacobs Fold. She was sorry he’d be gone for a few months, but saw the course as a worthwhile opportunity for him and for the farm. That response gives the exit its emotional balance: the separation will be felt, yet Mack isn’t being pushed out of the family’s plans. He’s going to build experience that could benefit the business when he returns.

Germany also places Mack near Noah Dingle, Charity’s son, who left the village for work there earlier this year. The source doesn’t say whether the two will share scenes or how often Mack will be in touch with the Dales. For now, that connection simply means his temporary move won’t put him entirely out of reach of someone close to Charity.

A break after a punishing year

The farming course arrives after a year of heavy drama for Mack. Last summer, he uncovered the truth about John Sugden, a medic whose actions put Mack in danger. Mack tried to escape through the woods, but John shot him with a bow and arrow and knocked him unconscious.

John then kept Mack in an underground bunker near his childhood home for weeks. Mack’s situation became clear to the village only after a separate confrontation: John went over a ravine with Aaron Dingle, and Aaron later came out of a coma and immediately told others that Mack was in trouble. Those events turned Mack’s disappearance into a prolonged crisis, with his rescue and return carrying far more weight than a routine absence from the village.

His personal life has been turbulent too. Earlier this year, Charity told Mack that she’d slept with Ross Barton and was pregnant. She gave birth to Leyla and handed the baby to Sarah Sugden, allowing Sarah to believe the child had been conceived through their surrogacy plan. That secret reshaped relationships across the family and left Mack with another painful chapter to absorb.

Against that history, a few months spent away for professional development offers a different kind of story. The course won’t erase what happened, and the episode doesn’t suggest that Germany resolves the family’s unresolved tensions. It does, however, move Mack out of the centre of the village’s immediate drama and gives his absence a constructive explanation.

Robb’s two demanding schedules

Robb has played Mackenzie since 2020, and his work on Strictly has now prompted Emmerdale to write this short departure. On the dance show, he and professional partner Jowita Przystał made it through last week’s Dance Off. They performed the series’ first Rumba of 2026 to “Back to Friends” by Sombr, earning 20 points from the judges.

The panel was divided over the routine, but the pair advanced to the next stage after support from viewers. That result keeps Robb’s competition going while the soap takes Mack out of the village for a limited stretch. The two storylines now run in parallel: Robb is learning fresh routines during the week, while Mack is set to take on a new course abroad.

The dance result also gives the soap’s timing some flexibility. Mack’s exit can cover Robb’s demanding competition schedule without turning the character’s departure into a permanent change. Emmerdale has made the return expectation explicit: Mack should be back not long after the Strictly champion is crowned. The exact course details and the way his return will affect the farm remain open.

That leaves the immediate consequences easy to follow. Matty must manage the work without the extra help he hoped for, Charity has accepted that the opportunity could serve the farm, and Mack gets time away after a bruising run of personal and physical danger. Whether the course changes his role when he comes home is the next question for the story.
