Strictly Come Dancing Host Line-up: BBC Dismisses Reports of Changes
The BBC calls reports of a Strictly presenting shake-up speculation, as its new trio faces a mixed reception after four weeks.

The BBC has rejected reports that it plans to change Strictly Come Dancing’s new presenting team after one series, leaving questions over the trio’s future grounded in anonymous claims rather than any confirmed decision.
Josh Widdicombe, Emma Willis and former professional dancer Johannes Radebe took over the live show when the BBC dance competition returned last month. Their debut has drawn a mixed response, with Widdicombe attracting criticism from some viewers. But Metro understands staff on the programme have no knowledge of plans to alter the line-up, and a BBC spokesperson described the reports as “pure and utter speculation.”
The claims, attributed to an unnamed source by The Daily Mail, suggest that decision-makers have already concluded the trio will need to change for next year. The source argued the presenters had failed to win over traditional viewers and described the programme as a target for jokes. Those are the source’s characterisations; the BBC has not confirmed that assessment or any proposed reshuffle.
The same account singled out Widdicombe’s role as potentially uncertain, while suggesting Willis could stay. It also named Zoe Ball and Rylan Clark as possible alternatives. No decision or timetable has been announced, and the BBC’s response offers no indication that those names are under consideration.
The new team was assembled after Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly announced in October 2025 that they would leave the programme at the end of the series. The pair had presented together since 2014, giving the BBC a well-established partnership to replace. Their departure made the choice of successors a major change for a show whose presentation is part of its familiar weekly rhythm.
Following the announcement, the BBC held screen tests for potential replacements. Rylan Clark, Clara Amfo and Sara Cox were among those who auditioned. Ball later said she had also tried for the job and felt a sense of “grief” after being turned down. Speaking on her Dig It podcast with Jo Whiley, she said: “I didn’t get it, but it’s OK.” She added that she had worked through “the seven stages of grief and rejection over the last couple of days.”
The casting process shows the range of options considered before Willis, Widdicombe and Radebe were chosen. But the reports of a possible reversal remain unverified. A mixed reception to a new team can create pressure around the programme’s tone and on-screen chemistry; it doesn’t, by itself, establish that a change is planned. For now, the stated position from the BBC is that the claims are speculation.
The presenting question is likely to stay in focus as the series continues, particularly because the trio are still early in their run. Their long-term prospects will be clearer through the programme’s performance and the BBC’s future decisions, not through anonymous predictions alone. This year’s celebrity cast and professional pairings have also brought a new mix to the programme, while Widdicombe has already faced criticism from viewers who say he looks “out of his depth.”
Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays and Sundays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The reports have put the new hosts under scrutiny early, but the only confirmed account of a possible change remains the BBC’s denial that one is currently established.
